As the capital of the Kowoj Maya, it was the largest of the few post-classic<br \/>\nMesoamerican sites in the area. Topoxt\u00e9 was most relevant during the post-classic era,<br \/>\nwhen it likely played a role in trade routes between the Mayan highlands and the<br \/>\nYucat\u00e1n Peninsula. Three main islands were inhabited during this time, and much<br \/>\nconstruction took place. It\u2019s thought that the site was left around 1450 AD, although the<br \/>\nexact reason for its abandonment is not known.<br \/>\nTopoxt\u00e9 has been surveyed throughout the 20th century, but it didn\u2019t really start<br \/>\nundergoing restoration until the early 1990s. Several temples and plazas are being<br \/>\nrestored, the most notable of which is Temple Pyramid C. This structure is the only<br \/>\npost-classic building left in Pet\u00e9n.
